Rest assured, in freelance, most clients are nice, but of course, I more often talk about those you should runaway from, because when everything’s going well… I admit it, I don’t talk about it (but I’ll repair this mistake in a future article!).
And so I wanted to tell you about a few cases that landed in my freelance life along the years, and that clearly had a “crazy client” warning!
THE CLIENT THAT DECIDES OF YOUR PRICES
A client contacts me, we talk about what he wants, then I offer to send him a quote, to which he answers: “No need to, I’ll send you my price sheet!”
I receive said sheet (that I accepted to get, in case his prices where similar to mine, naive as I was) and I realize that he’s 50% under my own rates. I inform the client of that, who finishes me with a: “Ah, now I can’t even choose the price I pay!”
THE CLIENT THAT DEMANDS THAT YOU ERASE EVERYTHING YOU WROTE FOR OTHER CLIENTS
A client that wanted exclusivity, and yes, you read that well, he was asking me to contact my previous clients to ask them to remove my articles from their website.
Why, of course!
THE CLIENT THAT WANTS (FOR FREE) ARTICLES OF YOUR BLOG
This one simply asked me if he could post some articles from my blog, without paying, and of course that I delete them from my blog.
“They’re already written anyway, I’m not going to pay for something you wrote for yourself, you didn’t pay yourself, did you?”
THE CLIENT THAT REFUSES TO MAKE A DEPOSIT AND GETS INDIGNANT THAT YOU DON’T TRUST HIM
The typical theatrical client!
He refuses to pay a deposit when signing the contract, arguing that he’s rather pay it fully at the end (when the contract clearly states that he has to pay a deposit and two following payments), and turns into an offended diva because I don’t trust him, this honest and pure being that he is.
I guess it’s useless to say how it ended, you can imagine that I didn’t want to work with such crazy clients!
AND YOU, HAVE YOU EVER MET SUCH CRAZY CLIENTS?
